As the release date for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie comes closer and closer, the more excited I am to finally know Jesse Pinkman’s story after Breaking Bad. The original teaser trailer that Netflix dropped was incredible, as it shows a natural progression from where the characters left off. Seeing Skinny Pete being interrogated by the D.E.A. on the whereabouts of Jesse was surreal and intriguing. The writers revealed just enough to add suspense, as well as reminded the viewers of the torment that Jesse had endured while being held captive by Jack Welker and his gang. The added easter eggs of agents Hank Schrader and Steve Gomez’s pictures on the wall was a good touch too, showing that this movie takes place directly after their deaths. The more recent trailers to come out have been consistent with the first teaser. However, the trailer released yesterday, September 25th, was the most notable in the sense that it revealed a lot of different aspects of the new movie. The trailer begins right after Jesse escapes from Welker’s camp, showing him reuniting with his friends Skinny Pete and Badger with the same outgrown hair and beard, and scarred up face. It goes on to show the physical, mental, and emotional trauma that Jesse has to come to terms. Additionally, the trailer makes a point to show Jesse’s growth through a few flashbacks and references to Breaking Bad: him holding the beetle, the picture of his girlfriend, Andrea, and her son, and the familiar settings. There are some unanswered things from the trailer, like the various clips of Jesse digging in the desert and being in new settings, but most notably who the ominous voice is at the end who asks “‘you ready?’” There is some speculation that it’s Walter White, but I think that theory is pretty unlikely since the writers made an effort to include Walter’s death at the end of the series. In conclusion, the main take away from this post is that I am psyched to watch El Camino.
